• Registered nurses work to promote good health and prevent illness. They educate patients and the public about various medical conditions; treat patients and help in their rehabilitation; and provide advice and emotional support to patients' families.
• They work in a number of settings including public and private hospitals, nursing homes, the community and home-based services, and in industry.
• Many registered nurses are general-duty nurses who focus on the overall care of patients.
• Registered Nurses can specialize by work setting or type of treatment, by disease, ailment, or condition, by organ or body system or by population.
  They may also work in combined specialties, such as pediatric oncology (the care of children and adolescents with cancer) or cardiac emergency (the care of patients with heart problems in emergency rooms).
• They may provide physical and technical care and support for patients and administer treatments.
• Provide emotional and psychological support and information to patients and their families and observe, monitor, assess, report and document patients' conditions and responses to treatment
• Prepare patients for operations or provide post-operative care.
• Provide first aid, assist in routine medical examinations, give advice on health matters and maintain sickness and accident records (where employed by large industrial or commercial organisations)
• Answer questions and provide information to patients and families about treatment and care
